Is there anything better than shopping? If you're a celebrity in summer 2019, the answer is simple: no. Absolutely not. For as long as the paparazzi industry has existed, celebrities have been spotted shopping, usually at Barneys. But for much of my life I've become accustomed to celebrities doing basically the same boring things that have nothing to do with shopping: running quickly from home to the waiting black car, catching up, or walking more slowly down the street a red carpet for a procession of cameras. This summer, however, they went shopping. They take to the streets to shop everywhere from Céline, Gucci and Marni to Palace, Nike and American Eagle.
How much does all this have to do with the nascent and inelegant era of Hollywood? open to speculation. Whatever the reason, celebrities have deigned to leave their penthouses and mansions in warm weather to enjoy all the good things. Retail is supposed to die, but no one told the rich and famous that. These are the ones that have been most successful.
The combination of famous shopping friends is a sight to behold. Some people like to pair up and trust the person who will probably have to watch them the most. See Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner leaving the Céline boutique, or Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag strolling triumphantly down Rodeo Drive after shopping at Gucci: what is love if not carrying huge packages around Beverly Hills with your partner ? Rami Malek and Lucy Boynton have become accustomed to shopping together and for each other.

An even rarer breed of celebrity shoppers? Seniors in unexpected places. (Probably airing on Netflix this fall!) The sight of Billy Crystal holding an American Eagle bag is stunning. This summer has been a great way to remind us that shopping does a lot of fun things, probably the best activity known to man.
